நண்பன் நாகாவின் Eloor library பற்றிய குறுந்செய்தி (வாட்சப்பில்) எனது லெண்டிங் library நாட்களை நினைவு படுத்தியது. Eloor Libarary நான் சென்னையை விட்டு சென்ற பிறகு ஆரம்பித்ததால் அதை பற்றி எனக்கு தெரியாது. இந்த நூலகத்தை பற்றி சமீபத்தில் வந்த செய்தி குறிப்புகளிலிருந்து, அது மிக பிரபலமான Library என்று புரிந்துகொள்ள முடிந்தது. 1970 -80 கால கட்டத்தில் மேற்கு மாம்பலத்தில் முருகன் லெண்டிங் librararyயும் T நகரில் ரவிராஜ் lending libraryயும் பிரசித்தமானது.
எனது பள்ளி நாட்களிலும், ஆரம்ப கட்ட கல்லூரி நாட்களிலும் முருகன் லெண்டிங் லைப்ரரியிலிருந்து நிறைய புத்தகங்கள் படித்துள்ளேன். சுஜாதாவின் தொடர்கதைகள் (வார பத்திரிகைகளில்) வெளிவந்தவை பைண்ட் செய்யப்பட்டு படிக்க கிடைக்கும். நைலான் கயிறு போன்ற கதைகள். அங்குதான் Perry Meson அறிமுகமானார். Perry Masonஐயும் சுஜாதாவையும் ஒரே பேராவில் குறிப்பிடுவதில் உள்நோக்கம் எதுவுமில்லை. இருவருமே Lawyer ஹீரோக்களின் கதாசிரியர்கள்.
ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் இங்கிலிஷ் நாவலகள் படிப்பது மிக கடினமாக இருக்கும். (தமிழ் மீடியத்தில் படித்ததால் வந்த பிரச்சினை). முதல் பத்து நாவல்கள் ஒன்றும் புரியவில்லை. James Hadley chase எனக்கு அவ்வளவாக பிடிக்கவில்லை. அனால் அதிலிருந்தான் பிள்ளையார் சுழி போட வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு நண்பனின் அறிவுரையினால் ஆரம்பித்தேன். 1979ல் பதினொன்றாம் வகுப்பு விடுமுறையில் பம்பாய் சென்ற போது Arthur Halileyன் Money Changers படிக்க கிடைத்தது. ஆனால் முடிக்க முடியவில்லை. சென்னை திரும்பியதும், முதற் கணமாய் முருகன் லைப்ரரிக்கு போய் இந்த புத்தகத்தை எடுத்து வந்து படித்து முடித்தேன். பின் Hotel, Airport, Final Diagnosis, Overload என்று அவரது பல புத்தகங்கள் படித்தது அங்கிருந்துதான். இன்றும் Arthur Hailey என்னுடைய favorite author.
இரண்டு வாரங்களுக்கு முன்பு மாம்பலம் சென்றபோது முருகன் லைப்ரரி இன்னும் இருக்கிறதா என்று நண்பனிடம் கேட்டேன். சென்று பார்த்தபோது அது எதிர் புறத்திற்கு மாறிவிட்டது தெரிந்தது. இப்பொழுது ஒரு பெரிய ஸ்டேஷனரி கடையாகிவிட்டது. புக் லெண்டிங் இன்னும் தொடர்கிறதா என்று தெரியவில்லை.
பிறகு பிரிட்டிஷ் கவுன்சில், கன்னிமரா மற்றும் USIS லைப்ரரிகள் அறிமுகம் கிடைத்தவுடன் (இந்த நூலகங்கள் எனது வாழ்க்கையில் ஏற்படுத்திய திருப்பங்களை பற்றி ஒரு புத்தகமே எழுதலாம் – மற்றொரு நேரம்!), முருகன் லெண்டிங் லைப்ரரி செல்வது மெல்ல மெல்ல குறைந்து பின் நின்று விட்டது.
லெண்டிங் லைப்ரரி அந்த காலத்தில் புத்தகங்களின் கருவூலம்.

Great writing Ramesh. Indeed our window to world of library started in Mahabalipuram , Government run one. I still remember the building and some of the book that we read there. Nice you could find a picture of Murugan library. The other novel concept was the mobile library that delivered weekly magazines to home in Mambalam. Not sure if we can get a picture of the cycle that was used to deliver.

Yes. I should have written about Mahabalipuram library first. Some how I restricted it to Lending Libraries. But cycle library should have been included.

Good writing Ramesh. Your fluency in Tamil is as good as your English writing.
Great to get the memories back of murugan lending library . We cannot forget those days. Both the brothers of murugan library, murugan and palani are equally interested in books. Lot of times we used to discuss about the books. We also used that space (potti kadai) to discuss about balachander films, politics, etc.
Whenever you write such things about our mambalam , you are taking me to those days and I do a mini travel to West mambalam for a while.

Yes West Mamablam is such an integral part of our lives, the mere mention of the name brings in a lot of memories. I went to see Ayodya Manadapam couple of weeks back and checked on Murugan lending library.
To me Madras in the seventies was probably the best place in the world to grow up. There are probably a hundred topic you can write about.
